Arthur Dove (1880–1946) is widely regarded as the first American abstract painter, celebrated for transforming natural forms into lyrical, modernist compositions. Dove’s work often merged organic motifs with musicality, reducing landscapes and natural elements into essential shapes and colors. His most popular works include Movement No. 1 (1911), Clouds and Water (1930), and Sunrise, Northport Harbor (1929), which showcase his pioneering role in early American modernism.
