Rosa Bonheur was one of the most celebrated animal painters of the 19th century. Born in Bordeaux, she became famous for her extraordinarily detailed and realistic depictions of animals, especially horses, cattle, and rural life. Bonheur studied animals directly from life, often visiting farms, slaughterhouses, and horse markets to observe their anatomy and movement.
At a time when women artists had limited opportunities, Bonheur achieved international fame and financial success. Her works were widely exhibited at the Paris Salon and collected throughout Europe and the United States. She was also honored with the Legion of Honour, one of France’s highest distinctions.
One of the Most Popular Painting
The Horse Fair (1853–1855) This monumental painting is Bonheur’s most famous work. It depicts the bustling horse market held on the Boulevard de l'Hôpital in Paris. The dramatic movement of powerful horses and the remarkable anatomical accuracy made it one of the most admired animal paintings of the 19th century. Today it is housed in the Met Museum.
