El Lissitzky (1890–1941) was a highly influential Russian avant-garde artist, designer, photographer, and architect who helped shape the direction of modern art, particularly in the 1920s.

Lissitzky is most famous for his series of abstract, geometric paintings and lithographs called Prouns (an acronym for Proyekty Unovisa, or "Projects for the Affirmation of the New". These works were his attempt to transition traditional painting into architecture, combining flat, colored shapes into three-dimensional projections.

Lissitzky took the pure, abstract geometric forms of Suprematism and gave them a practical, socially purposeful role, which aligned him with the principles of Constructivism.
